ADULT LEADERSHIP-
WHO ARE WE ???
Troop 85 is fortunate and blessed to have a large number of dedicated parents and adults who routinely contribute in many different ways to the success of the troop. Our intent here is to provide a synopsis of the core registered adult leadership.
Tom Hart - Scoutmaster
Tom has been a Westerville resident since 1983, where he lives here with his wife, daughter and son who is a Life scout. He has served on various school committees and the Board of Zoning Appeals for 8 years. His wife and daughter are also actively involved in Girl Scouting. When not scouting, Tom works for American Electric Power. When time permits he also enjoys fishing and biking. He has been involved in scouting at both the Cub Scout (Pack 192) and Boy Scout Programs since 1995. He has completed Okama, which is enhanced adult scouting training, he is a recipient of the Boy Scout Leader’s Training Award, Webelos Den Leader Award, Den Award, and a recipient of the Triple Crown of National High Adventure. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. Since 1996, Tom has taught both Cub and Boy Scouting classes at Council sponsored Adult Leader Training (Pow-Wow). He is also a certified Wilderness First Responder.
Don Coffey- Assistant Scoutmaster
A Westerville resident since 1992, Don lives here with his wife Katy and three boys. The oldest is a Boy Scout and the younger two are Cub Scouts with Pack 85. Katy is active in Cub Scouting. Don works for American Electric Power. Don swims and runs when he can, he also enjoys camping and wishes he could do it more often. He is a Fourth degree Knight of Columbus. He has been involved in Scouting as a boy in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts where he obtained the rank of Eagle. He was an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 201 in Endicott, NY while living there. If his young wife had been with him when he went to Philmont he probably would have stayed. He has completed Okama, the enhanced adult Scout training course. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Tim Doney - Assistant Scoutmaster
Tim and his wife Kris have lived in the Columbus area since 1985, the last ten being in Westerville and the St. Paul Parish. Tim and Kris have three boys, all of whom are active in the Scouting program at levels from the Troop's Senior Patrol Leader to Tenderfoot to Webelos. Tim practices law "in house" for Worthington Industries, coaches lacrosse, football, basketball, baseball and golf and has been involved in several positions with Pack 85 and Troop 85 since 1999. Tim has taught Junior Achievement for the St. Paul School and has been a judge for the St. Paul School, Regional and Ohio State Science Fairs for several years. Tim and has participated in three Boy Scout Summer Camp trips, earned the Pipestone Award at the Seven Ranges Scout Reservation and completed the Raven enhanced adult leadership training program in 2006.
Jim Girvin - Assistant Scoutmaster
Jim and his family have been Westerville residents since 1986, and he has a psychiatric practice in the community. He is the father of 3 sons. The 2 older sons are active in Boy Scouts – one is a Star Scout, the other a First Class Scout. He first became involved in scouting while the boys were progressing through the Cub Scout ranks. He has been an Assistant Scoutmaster for the past 2 years and has completed Blackfoot, the enhanced adult leadership-training program. In addition, he is certified in First Aid and CPR through the Red Cross.
Paul Henley - Assistant Scoutmaster
Paul is a lifetime Central Ohio. He grew up in Worthington, and was a member of Troop 123, where he obtained the rank of Life Scout. He currently lives in Westerville with his wife and two sons - one is a Life scout and one is a Star Scout. Paul works for Fifth Third Bank. His hobbies include golfing, traveling (has visited 45 of the 50 states) and reading. He has been involved in scouting as an adult leader with the Boy Scouts since 2002. He has completed Okama, which is enhanced adult scouting training. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow. He is a Merit Badge counselor for Personal Management (an Eagle Rank required merit badge), Cooking, Golf and American Business.
Steve Krum - Assistant Scoutmaster
Steve lives with his family in Clintonville (central Columbus, just north of OSU). He works for Bravo Development, Inc. in their MIS dept supporting the company’s restaurant computer systems nationwide. His wife Brenda is a teacher in the Columbus Public Schools and consultant to the State of Ohio Dept of Education; daughter Lara is in the US Army working as a Korean translator and son Nat is a Life Scout.
He was involved in Scouting as a boy, worked as a Webelos den leader for two years, attended Okama training and joined Troop 85 in 2001 as Assistant Scoutmaster. Steve enjoys wilderness backpacking, canoeing, whitewater rafting and camping; he has experienced our nations’ natural beauty from Yellowstone to Maine to the Everglades. When not in the woods he is an avid motorcyclist and home improvement procrastinator.
John Ortman - Assistant Scoutmaster
John has been involved in BSA since 1988. John and his family have lived in Westerville since 1997. He and his wife, Katherine, have three sons; all who have been involved in the scouting program. Their oldest son James is an Eagle Scout, John Chase continues to work through the program, and Paul is also an Assistant Scoutmaster. John is an IT consultant with EDS working with JP Morgan Chase. John has enjoyed several of the High Adventure Camping Treks across the USA with various troops with his sons. He and his family have been with Troop 85 since 1987.
Rich Schmelzer- Assistant Scoutmaster
Rich and his family have been Westerville residents since 1987. He has two daughters and one son. Rich recently joined Troop 85 after his son crossed-over from Pack 85 in February/07. Rich’s wife, Nancy, is a Girl Scout leader. His oldest daughter has achieved her Silver award in Girl Scouts. His youngest daughter is a Brownie. For the past three years, Rich was the Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 85. He also held positions in the pack as an Assistant Cubmaster (1 year), Den Leader (2 years), and a Webelos Leader (2 years). Rich enjoys backpacking, camping, hiking, and OSU football. He avidly awaits the opportunity to experience his first Philmont when his son is old enough for the high adventure trips. Rich completed Blackfoot, the enhanced adult leadership-training program.
Bill Soller – Assistant Scoutmaster
Bill is a long time resident of Westerville where he lives with is wife, daughter and three boys (who are also involved in scouting). He works at Liebert Corporation in Worthington, enjoys youth coaching and was a former Cubmaster at St. Paul Pack 85 and is now an Assistant Scoutmaster with the Troop. He has attended Okama training, an enhanced adult scouting training course, along with a Wilderness First Aid course.
Ben Dolcich - Committee Chairperson Ben and his family have lived in Westerville since 1989. He and his wife have 3 children. He has completed youth protection training. Their oldest son achieved the rank of Eagle with Troop 85 in 2002 and another who should in 2007. He is an Engineering Manager at Liebert Corporation in Columbus and has been involved with Troop 85 since 1994. Ben and his 2 sons thoroughly enjoyed a BSA Philmont high adventure trek together in 2005.
